Sportex gets their flying colours in delivering
a new Tiger Turf, hockey landmark for
RAF Cosford.

RAF Cosford in Shropshire is a major part of the Defence College of Technical Training (DCTT). It is at the centre of the RAF’s mission to deliver flexible, affordable, modern and effective technical training, that meets the needs of the UK’s Armed Forces now and into the future. The RAF School of Physical Training is situated at RAF Cosford with excellent facilities, including artificial turf, hockey and football pitches, an indoor swimming pool, tennis courts and two large gymnasia for all indoor activities.

With a thriving hockey community at the base, SPORTEX were delighted to be chosen to upgrade the tired, existing hockey facility. The existing artificial turf and insitu shockpad were removed and replaced with a proven sand-dressed texturised monofilament artificial turf by TigerTurf. The new playing surface was installed over a new in-situ bound rubber performance shockpad layer. Permanent line markings for hockey were inlaid into the surface, along with cross pitch D’s for recreational hockey and football use. The perimeter fence line was remedaited to impart greater durability with additional 2m netting installed to extend ball-stop capability. New team shelters, storage and access decontamination were  installed, and new hockey and football goal equipment completed the remodelled sporting facility.

EDINBURGH

University opts for Polytan’s innovative Olympic surface for internationally certified pitch.

Peffermill, is Scotland’s National Hockey Academy with two floodlit, water based astroturf pitches as its centrepiece. Peffermill’s pitches are home to University of Edinburgh’s mens’ and womens’ hockey clubs, as well as a training and competition venue for other national and local league club teams. Furthermore, Peffermill was the first venue in Scotland to be formally certified to stage international hockey competitions.

SPORTEX were delighted to continue their long-standing working relationship with the University by the commission of one of the existing water-based facilities. After the removal of the existing carpet and worn shockpad from the site, a detailed survey and assessment of the sub-base was undertaken to ensure the tolerances continued to comply with the requirements of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Global Performance Standard.

New in-situ bound SBR shockpad was installed over the engineered base and surfaced with ‘Poligras Platinum CoolPlus’, a premium and innovative product, manufactured by Polytan. The surface chosen by the University for the project was the sole elite hockey surface used at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

SPORTEX delivers on time, the tough

to comprehensively refurbish their entire
track surface.

Hutchesons’ Grammar School is a co-educational, independent school in the south-side of Glasgow. Founded in 1641, the school has a long-held record of academic achievement and offers pupils an unrivalled choice of extra-curricular activities at its primary and secondary schools.

The school formally instructed SPORTEX to carry out a full cleaning, retexturing and relining of the entire track surface to bring it back to life after its performance and appearance had deteriorated in the last couple of years.

Works to athletics track are notoriously sensitive to weather conditions, so careful planning and management of the project were critical to ensuring that it progressed in a timely manner, and within the tough deadline set by the school.

Despite the weather, SPORTEX delivers a new polymeric surface, for a new athletics season and all on schedule.

The athletics stadium at the John Wright Sports Centre was opened in 1989, by Sir Steve Ovett. The area has a 400 metre, eight lane, porous polymeric athletics track, with infield athletics facilities for javelin, discus, hammer and high, long and triple.

After a competitive tender process, SPORTEX were chosen as the main contractor for the refurbishment of the entirety of the polymeric surfacing at the athletics stadium. The existing polymeric, was moss and algae treated, before thorough, deep-cleaning using a unique water process, specifically designed for athletics’ track cleaning.

Once the cleanliness of the surface had been inspected and approved, a new ‘structure coat’ was applied, as a spray finish of red coloured EPDM (rubber) granules and pigmented polyurethane. Finally, all lane, hurdle and event markings, were set out and painted using a specialist 2-part polyurethane paint.

The project was delivered on time, and ready for the new athletics season, despite challenging weather conditions, much to the delight and surprise of the athletics clubs that use the facility on a daily basis.

Comprehensive Sportex specialist sports construction and civil engineering project with innovative undersurface.

Cargilfield School is attended by more than 300 girls and boys, aged 3-13 years and is the oldest independent boarding and day prep school in Scotland. SPORTEX was selected to provide specialist sports construction and civil engineering skills in building a new 90m x 60m, fully equipped artificial turf pitch for hockey and tennis, supported by a newly refurbished, three court tennis facility. The new build specification was an engineered macadam construction, incorporating a lateral drainage system; overlaid by an in-situ bound rubber shock pad. High quality 18mm TigerTurf ‘EVO PRO’ sand-dressed artificial turf was installed for both the new hockey facility and the refurbished tennis courts. Both facilities had 868 rigid panel weld mesh perimeter fencing installed, and were furnished with a full complement of hockey and tennis sports equipment, along with LED floodlighting.

The refurbished tennis court facility was installed with TenCate Ecocept® Performance Sports Base, an advanced innovative porous pavement, specially developed to use below synthetic sports turf surfaces. The base acts as a combined structural layer and shock pad, ensuring a stable surface, whilst reducing the loads experienced by players. It also reduces the impact on the environment, as it is almost entirely made from recycled materials, including recycled synthetic pitches.

The project was delivered on budget and we are delighted with both the quality of the build and the after sales service and maintenance support. I would not hesitate to recommend SPORTEX for similar projects.”
