EAST KILBRIDE

Despite the weather, SPORTEX delivers a new polymeric surface, for a new athletics season and all on schedule.

The athletics stadium at the John Wright Sports Centre was opened in 1989, by Sir Steve Ovett. The area has a 400 metre, eight lane, porous polymeric athletics track, with infield athletics facilities for javelin, discus, hammer and high, long and triple.

After a competitive tender process, SPORTEX were chosen as the main contractor for the refurbishment of the entirety of the polymeric surfacing at the athletics stadium. The existing polymeric, was moss and algae treated, before thorough, deep-cleaning using a unique water process, specifically designed for athletics’ track cleaning.

Once the cleanliness of the surface had been inspected and approved, a new ‘structure coat’ was applied, as a spray finish of red coloured EPDM (rubber) granules and pigmented polyurethane. Finally, all lane, hurdle and event markings, were set out and painted using a specialist 2-part polyurethane paint.

The project was delivered on time, and ready for the new athletics season, despite challenging weather conditions, much to the delight and surprise of the athletics clubs that use the facility on a daily basis.
